Bonifas is Nospelt was a recent destination for Luxembourg's famed Knights of Epicurus, thanks to a recommendation from a friend in the area. Arriving in tiny Nospelt it was clear that the outdoor deck of Bonifas is the place to be on a Friday evening. The deck was packed with people enjoying drinks and watching the village traffic walk and drive by. The Knights found a table inside for an aperatif, then moved into the small dining room in the back. Bonifas has the subdued atmosphere of a local Luxembourg cafe (that indeed it is, complete with Jeu de Quilles!) which belies a truely talented kitchen staff. After taking our seats we were offered an amuse bouche of a warm, delicious fish soup. Most of us ordered from the menu du jour, which offered two choices of three courses for €45, quite a bargain. The entrées of a veal tourrine and a green bean and smoked salmon salad were unanimously well-received; subtle, delicious and quite fresh. The main course options were a lamb filet with an anchovy sauce and a filet of cod over a parmesean risotto. The lamb was good, not overcooked, the sauce much more complementary then it sounds. The cod was fantastic, fresh and perfectly cooked, served with a light chorizo sauce and the creamy risotto which complemented brilliantly. The desserts were delicious and unique, one was a sort of tiramisu but with blueberries, much cream and no cake.
One Knight ordered off the standard menu, enjoying a steak filet very much.
The service is understated but good, a real family feel to the place. The wine list was good, we enjoyed two bottles of red. Two of the Knights, however, were most partial to the house red, delicious and inexpensive. The Knights of Epicurus heartily recommend Bonifas and have plans to return soon!
